Elimination Communication… the update

Karis using the potty

Karis has been doing really well with the elimination communication (EC) that we have been doing for a few months now. She’s now mobile as she army crawls across the floor to intently get to whatever it is that is unsafe for her to play with, even when she has to bypass many of her favourite toys to get there! At first when she began to move around more, she would almost always have a miss (EC talk for an accident) as she exerted herself to accomplish what she was trying to to. Lately though she has more control, and has been very active while still waiting to use potty until she lets me know (she has a distinctive sort of little cry) or I think that enough time has passed that she would probably have to pee. Next I am very excited to see if she’ll start to crawl over to the potty when she has to go (as the book says that some babies will do once they are mobile). I’m also starting to do the sign for toilet to her before I potty her, so that hopefully this will help us to communicate even more effectively with each other (we had much success with our other girls using sign language at meal times before they began talking). Also, Karis received some really nice infant underwear for Christmas and in one or two months I think that she’ll be ready to start wearing them which I am super excited about!

For all of you local people in Essex County, I will be facilitating a cloth diapering/elimination communication support group beginning in January at Sweetheart Diapers and More in Windsor. It will take place one Friday a month, beginning January 14th at 10:30 – 11:30am. Check out the website at www.sweetheartdiapers.com for more info about this great natural baby store and hopefully some of you will come out to the group.
